Just after breakfast you are summoned to Hillerys home back behind
her boutique. 'Ah Mr. Holmes, thank you for comming', she says.
She then proceeds to tell you that last night she and her sister
Scarlet had given a party. Although she had had to leave early,
she understands that the party went on late into the night. This
morning Hillery returned from Essix to find her sister dead on the
floor.
In the middle of her story, Inspector Lestrade showed up with a
warrant for the arrest of Hillery. Before she was carted away
she managed to slip you a piece of paper. It reads as follows:

After talking to Gregson, you find that the corroner places the
time of death at between 2 and 3am. He also tells you that things
look grimm for your client as Lestrade is building quite a case
and motive.
In order to help Hillery you must find out:

Alas as the party quieted down, John Wright found himself alone
with Scarlet. He had for quite some time loved her and had thus
far never told her. At last he found the courage to ask for her
hand in marriage.
John was depressed to find her answer was no, but when he found
out that she planned to marry Jeffrey Fitzgerald his best friend
he became furious. In his rage he grabbed for anything and came
up with her fox stole that had been draped over a chair. He then
choaked her with it and fled.

Mr. Dennison remembers that John VanHorne and Martha Gilbert
came into a late showing for a newly aquired art collection.
They arrived at about 10:30 and stayed for a late cocktail party
hosted by the Gallery until about 3:00am.

The night desk clerk, whom you had roused from his sleep,
remembers that Robert and Joan Hastings had come in just after
1:30am and had gone straight up to their room.

A teller hands you a receipt. On the back you find the following

You run into the corroner at Hillerys. He tells you that an
examination of the body showed some strange hairs on Scarlets
neck.

A manufactured good that fails to work.

Among the scattered papers on the exchange floor, you find a note.
It reads:
Motive Clue (Part 2 of 2)
Webster defines it as 'to avoid deliberately'.

You find the cabbie that took Hillery out to Essex last night
around 8:30pm.

A crumpled piece of paper reveals the following clue:

The bartender from last night remembers that Rita Coolidge and
Mary Cotton had come in about 1:00am and had met some friends for
drinks. They had stayed till well after 4:00am. He remembers
quite well as he had to chase them all out so he could close up
for the night.

One of the ships Captains tells you that Joseph Phillips works on
the freighter Lord Marsly and that he was back at midnight as that
is about the time the Lord Marsly steamed out of port.
